Bushel Boy Farms Sells Assets to Best Boy Farms
Bushel Boy Farms, a greenhouse producer headquartered in Owatonna, Minn., sold its commercial greenhouses in Owatonna and Mason City, Iowa, to Best Boy Farms on May 30. Chuck Tryon, president of Bushel Boy Farms, announced the news in an email to the Minnesota Star Tribune. He did not indicate whether Best Boy would continue operations as normal. Best Boy Farms registered as a company with the state of Minnesota in early April.
Bushel Boy started growing greenhouse tomatoes in 1990 and expanded its offerings to include cucumbers and strawberries in the last few years. Rahr Corporation (a Minnesota-based malt manufacturer) purchased the company in 2019, and Bushel Boy opened its $35 million greenhouse facility in Mason City just five years ago.
According to a report from the Minnesota Star Tribune, in June 2024, Bushel Boy was ordered to pay nearly $200,000 in back wages and unpaid damages to 94 employees for unpaid overtime.
