The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) aims to help growers accurately estimate production costs and profits for their greenhouse operation with a new online course entitled “Costing & Profitability.”
The course is a part of UF/IFAS’ award-winning Greenhouse Training Online program. Lead instructors include Charlie Hall, Ph.D., from Texas A&M University and Horticulture Scientist Paul Fisher, Ph.D., from the UF/IFAS Extension.
The course is designed for experienced growers and people with higher education backgrounds. Topics covered include crop enterprise budgets, income statements, allocation of overhead, seasonality, space use, shrinkage, labor costs, and more.
Offered in both English and Spanish, the course runs from Aug. 11 to Sept. 5 and costs $550 per participant. All course material is available online, and includes pre-recorded videos, an interactive discussion board with professors, and quizzes. Two new modules are activated each week during the course, for a total of eight learning modules. Participants can take the course at their own pace and time during the first four weeks, with a typical time commitment of about six hours per week.
