Earlier this year, greenhouse producer Village Farms announced plans to shift its focus from vegetables to cannabis. On May 30, the company sealed the deal by folding its fresh produce operations into Vanguard Food LP, a joint venture led by Charlie Sweat, managing principal of Sweat Equities, LLC. Village Farms walked away with $40 million in cash, its core greenhouse facilities, and a minority stake in Vanguard.
The company steps into its next chapter growing cannabis in its four facilities in Monahans, Texas, and British Columbia. While it now has a strict focus on cultivating cannabis, its long-term supply agreement with Vanguard allows the company to maintain a produce revenue stream without day-to-day responsibilities.
In addition, the company is leasing its facility in Marfa, Texas, to monetize its non-core greenhouse assets.
“This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Village Farms,” says Michael DeGiglio, CEO. “We are ready to move forward independently from produce.”
